Paleochora, often called the Nymph of the Libyan Sea, is a village on the southern coast of Chania that captures the essence of southwestern Crete. From its golden beaches and picturesque streets to its historic ruins and endless places to eat, this is a town to where many travelers return season after season.
This one-day itinerary will guide you through the highlights of Paleochora, ensuring you make the most of your time in this serene destination.

Morning in Paleochora
Start with a Walk Along the Waterfront
Upon arrival in town, begin your day with a stroll along Paleochoraโs waterfront promenade. Take in the views of the Libyan Sea and enjoy the townโs calm morning vibe as fishing boats return to the harbor. Spend some time having breakfast at a local cafรฉ.
However, I’d suggest heading to Vakakis, the most famous bakery in the village that makes some delicious sweet or savory pastries every morning.

Visit the Venetian Fort of Selino
Head to the ruins of the Venetian fort that overlooks the town for some fantastic views. The fortress was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and it was part of a strategic effort to fortify the region and assert Venetian control over the rebellious local population.
The castle features a square design and used to have three watchtowers, quarters for officials, a chapel, and water tanks. Selino Castle faced multiple attacks throughout the centuries, Cretan rebels demolished part of it in 1332 but the Vewnetians reconstructed the fortress in just a few months.
Castle Selino was also sacked by pirate Barbarossa in the 1500s and then captured by the Turks in the 17th century.

Relax at Pachia Ammos Beach
Considered by many as the most beautiful beach in Paleochora, this expansive shore is a family-friendly place to spend the rest of the morning.
Pachia Ammos is Paleochoraโs main beach and features a relatively shallow shore, soft sand and pebbles, and clear (but often cold) waters, itโs perfect for swimming or sunbathing and it never feels crowded!

Afternoon in Town
Lunch at a Taverna
If you’re a fan of sea food, there’s no place like the seaside to enjoy lunch in Paleochora. However, if you’re like me and prefer to savor mountain food (which is much more common in Crete than seafood), then head to the main road in the village and order a dish with local pies, moussaka, and – of course – a tomato salad. Paleochora produces some of the best tomatoes in Crete!
My favorite place to eat in Paleochora has always been Masasoura, which is on the main road leading to the Evagelistria church.

Explore the Old Town
Paleochora is truly a picturesque place with a bit of a hippie vibe thanks to the colorful houses and the plenty of flowers that decorate the alleys. During your walk, make a point to visit the picturesque church in the center of town, housing a gorgeous bell tower.
Walking (and taking pictures) in the old part of town and taking pretty pictures has always been one of my favorite things to do in Paleochora. You can also explore the local architecture, get to know shops and and cafรฉs and browse for souvenirs like handmade ceramics and beach clothes, olive oil, or local honey.

Evening
Watch the Sunset at Chalikia Beach
As the day winds down, head to Chalikia Beach to watch the sunset. The rocky shore is located east of the Paleochora peninsula and it offers a relaxing setting, far from the more lively seaside promenade near the port.
Over here, you can pick a cafe and sit to enjoy a glass of chilled beer as you look at the sky transforming into unique shades of orange and pink.

Dinner Under the Stars
For dinner, choose a family-run taverna in the town center or by the beach. Sample traditional dishes like antikristo (slow-roasted lamb) and Greek salad will be both rewarding and delicious. In my case, I would definitely go back to Massasoura, but I know you want to try a different restaurant, so I suggest checking out Romeiko Wine and Deli.

Late Evening
Conclude your day with a drink at a laid-back bar in the town. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer a cocktail or a glass of local wine, Paleochoraโs must-visit place for nightlife scene is the legendary Agios, in the center of the village.
After, as with every visit to the southern coast of the island, I suggest taking a quiet walk along the shore to enjoy the starlit sky. The remote location offers minimal light pollution, making it an ideal spot for stargazing.
