How to Drink Coffee in Crete
Here are some of the most cherished coffee traditions enjoyed by the locals.
CRETANS GO OUT FOR COFFEE
In Crete, nobody can help but notice that a coffee cup is a constant companion throughout the day for the locals. In the morning, they savor a cup of coffee at home and then stop by their favorite coffee shop to work for a to-go cup. During the workday, coffee breaks are essentialโฆ No job in Greece is complete without at least two coffee breaks daily.
After work, they will either meet with friends for (yet) another cup of coffee or relax at home with… another cup of coffee! Besides, going out for a cuppa is also the norm. It won’t matter if they already have three different coffee types at home. A Cretan drinks coffee in a coffee shop… even when the place is just around the corner or across the street from home!

COFFEE WITH FRIENDS
If you pop in at a friend’s, you’ll first be offered coffee. This is part of philoxenia, Greek hospitality that has made the island famous. Even if you were invited for dinner, for example, the first thing you would all have would be coffee, then have a chit-chat, and only after that would you sit at the table.
Types of Coffee You Can Find in Crete
Letโs see what coffee types you can get on the island. However, remember that the traditional Greek coffee, Ellinikรณ, is a must to experience the most authentic local taste.
Ellinikรณ Kafรฉ
Ellinikรณ is prepared in a small pot known as briki. The pot was usually heated in hot sand, which only traditional places still do. Grounded coffee is added to the briki with water (and sugar if you want it sweet) until it starts to boil.
This is a critical moment; you canโt let it boil totally, as it will spoil the taste! Greek coffee is usually served in small cups with a glass of water, and sometimes a traditional sweet called loukoumi. Brewing a perfect Ellinikรณ is a delicate secret that only Greeks know how to manage.

Summer: Iced Coffee
During the summer, iced coffee is the preferred drink. Locals love their Freddo Espressos and Freddo Cappuccinos. It’s really the preferred beverage for most locals all day round. Another cold coffee choice is Frappรฉ, and I’m a fan of it! Frappรฉ was invented in Greece during the fifties and made with instant coffee. Even when most people will look down on Frappรฉ, considering it too unhealthy or not “real coffee,” I still love it and drink it.

Filter Coffee
Another coffee you can order is filter coffee, known as Gallikรณ (French), but locals are not fans of it. In fact, tourists mostly choose this type of coffee.
Sugar? Yes, Please
When you order your coffee, remember they will ask you how sweet you would like your drink. So you can ask to have it made with or without sugar. Here are some terms that will help you to order the coffee the way you like it:
- Sketo โ without sugar
- Metrio โ 2 teaspoons of sugar
- Pros Gliko โ 3 teaspoons of sugar
- Gliko โ 4 teaspoons of sugar
- Me mavri – with brown sugar
- Me zaxarini – with sweetener
- Me gala – with milk

CHANIA TOWN
Aroma Cafรฉ
📍 4, Akti Tompazi, Venetian Harbor

Located in the Old Venetian Harbor, this is one of my favorite coffee places in Chania. It’s next to the Kucuk Hasan Pasha Mosque and a fantastic place for a break after a walk in town. It has great views of the port.
The cafรฉ is in a historical house with marvelous stone walls and Venetian arches. Since Aroma is popular, it’s often crowded.
Pro Tip: Try their Cretan breakfast!
Marina Sailing Club
📍 14, Defkalionos, Chania Marina

One of the best places in the port of Chania, facing the Marina and the Lighthouse, is inside an ancient shipyard built by the Venetians. The location is spectacular, and the coffee is truly good. But you can also spend time inside enjoying a glass of wine and some live piano music. This is one of the places I enjoy visiting in winter.
>> And in summer, I host several wine-tasting sessions here. Do you want to join me?

To Brikaki
📍 25, Kondilaki, Old Town

This sweet little coffee place is also in Old Town, near the Venetian Harbor. The name mprikaki means โsmall brikiโ (the pot used to prepare Greek coffee), so Greek coffee is excellent in this place.
To Brikaki has a fantastic design featuring stone walls, dark wooden tables, and elegant golden coffee pots in every corner!
Ababa Bar Gallery
📍 12 Isodion, Old Town

This busy espresso bar is popular due to its incredible interior design, excellent coffee, and signature cocktails. Besides, the service is impeccable!
Bright pictures cover every inch of the walls, and the flavorful and aromatic coffee is served in colorful cups. Beware that it gets very crowded, especially in the evening. This place is worth a visit.
Galileo Cafรฉ
📍 32, Akti Kountourioti, Venetian Harbor

This is the place for a good cup of coffee and fantastic harbor views. Located in an ancient Venetian Mansion with entrances from the seaside and Zambeliou Street in the old town, it is one of the places where you might find me sitting with a glass of frappรฉ or a freddo espresso in summer.
Neighbor’s Chania, Boutique Street Food
📍 Karaoli & Dimitriou, Old Town

It’s not only street food over here! This cute little spot serves excellent coffee, fresh pastries, and sandwiches. Apothiki All Day Espresso Bar
📍 3, Akti Tombazi, Venetian Harbor

Apohitki also serves rich Cretan breakfasts, evening cocktails, and a great selection of ice cream. Soft music in the indoor space makes the atmosphere pleasant and relaxing.
Pallas
📍 15-17, Akti Tombazi, Chania Marina

A favorite of mine in summer and winter, Pallas is probably the trendiest coffee place facing the new Marina. It is housed in an old mansion of a Turkish ruler, steps from the old Venetian docks. In winter, seek refuge on the first floor with direct Lighthouse views.
The place serves great coffee, delicious food, and wine in the evening. The views of the Lighthouse are amazing from this corner, so make it even more romantic and come for your cup of coffee while the sun is going down. You will love it!
Boheme
📍 26-28, Chalidon, Old Town

Another favorite of mine is Boheme; it’s not just a great place for dinner and wine tasting at night but one of my go-to places for a delicious latte, a freddo, or even a cup of local malotira tea. Your coffee will come with a complimentary portion of homemade cake or a baked delicacy, which you can enjoy in one of the most delicious gardens in town. Don’t miss this placeโseriously, don’t!

📍 Parodos Kondilaki, Old Town

This amazing place is located next to the old Jewish Romaniote synagogue. The old stone walls, beautiful decorations, and almost no roof create a magical nighttime atmosphere.
Enjoy your cup at the bar or one of the many tables. I’d suggest you visit this place both in the daytime when you can see sun rays through the roof beams and in the evening when everything is decorated with candles and when, for a change, you can have a cocktail and hear some music.
Jerry’s The Sweet Foodtruck
📍 77, Chalidon, Old Town

Have you ever tried coffee from a can? This place prepares your freddo to take right in front of you and place it in a glass that is more of a soda can.
