Cretan Hospitality at Porto Maltese in Agios Nikolaos
We arrived at Porto Maltese after a 4-hour drive from Chania, with several stops on the road for pictures. We were tired and needed a shower, a rest, and a bite.
The friendly hotel staff, aware of our long trip, made the check-in process a breeze. We were welcomed with a refreshing glass of homemade lemonade, coffee, and wipes.
Rooms at Porto Maltese Boutique Estate
We had a very comfortable two-level family room, with the kid’s bedroom upstairs and my bedroom on the ground floor. The patio in my bedroom was where I would normally sit to have a morning coffee and freshly baked pastries.
The room also had a sitting area, a wide wardrobe, and a comfortable bathroom.
My favorite time of the day was returning from our long trips in the area, sitting under the trees in the yard, and enjoying a good cup of espresso.
Another detail I adored is that both in the rooms and in the common areas, there are plenty of books for guests to choose from and to read during their stay.

Lake View
Porto Maltese Boutique Estate faces the lake and the sea, but it’s not noisy even if it’s located steps up from the road. Waking up in the morning to the magnificent view of Lake Voulismeni was one of the highlights of our family holiday in Agios Nikolaos.
Having to cross only walk a few meters across the street to get to a restaurant was priceless. Making it easy to have a bite when we were tired late at night and didn’t really feel like going far.
The Hotel’s Central Location
One of the best features of the hotel is its central but at the same time quiet location. Everything is just a few meters away: the center, the pedestrian streets, the lake, and the beaches. Parking is difficult in Agios Nikolaos since roads are narrow and very steep.
However, it was always possible for us to find a parking spot at the hotel’s rear entrance every time we returned from a day trip in Lasithi.
Why I Stayed in Porto Maltese
Porto Maltese is a small boutique hotel run by a local family. The management knows their city well and can suggest great things to do during your stay. I felt cared for by the staff at all times.
They were always asking how they could make our stay even better. I’m sure this will not be the last time we visit Agios, and -probably- my next stay in Agios will also be at Porto Maltese.
