What to do in Sitia in one day

Sitia combines history and quiet charm in a compact, easy-to-explore town, pedestrian friendly and perfect for families. From its Venetian fortress to its inviting beaches, this itinerary takes you through the town’s must-visit spots and hidden gems, offering a comprehensive experience in just one day.

The town also serves as a gateway to explore the easternmost parts of the island, including the famed Vai Palm Forest, Zakros Gorge, and the Minoan Palace of Kato Zakros, as well as several traditional villages. Let’s explore this quieter side of Crete that’s truly worth experiencing!

Morning

Start at Kazarma Fortress
Begin your day with a visit to the Kazarma Fortress, a Venetian-era stronghold built back in the 13th century that offers panoramic views of the town and the sparkling sea. Explore this historical place take advantage of the scenic viewpoint to take great pictures of Sitia.

The name Kazarma derives from the Italian Casa di Arma, meaning House of Arms, as the fortress once served as a military barracks during the Venetian occupation of Crete. This construction was part of a larger network of fortifications designed to protect Sitia from pirate raids. Although it suffered significant damage during the Ottoman conquest and later earthquakes, portions of its walls and towers remain intact.

Stroll Along the Harbor
Once you’ve visited the fortress, walk down to the harbor for a leisurely morning walk by the sea. Then, stop for breakfast near the port and admire the tranquil landscape with palm trees and small fishing boats that add a pop of color.

Order a traditional Greek breakfast of fresh bread, honey, and yogurt paired with a cup of strong Greek coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice. You will want to stay for ever!

Visit the Sitia Archaeological Museum
Just a short walk from the harbor, the museum houses artifacts covering a timeline from the Neolithic period through the Roman era, the museum highlights the region’s role in the development of the ancient Minoan and Dorian civilizations.

The museum is renowned for hosting examples of Linear A script, an undeciphered writing system used by the Minoans, as well as artifacts from the nearby Minoan Palace of Zakros, such as intricate pottery, tools, and ceremonial objects related to Minoan life, trade, and religious practices.

However, the most important piece in the museum is the The Kouros of Sitia, a remarkable 2-meter-tall statue that dates back to the 7th century BCE, from the Archaic Period of ancient Greece.

The kouros is unique because it represents a fusion of Minoan and Greek artistic traditions, reflecting Crete’s cultural exchanges with the wider Aegean world. The figure stands in a traditional kouros pose, with one leg slightly forward and arms at its sides, symbolizing youthful strength and idealized human form. The statue is believed to have had a religious function, possibly as a votive offering or a representation of a deity.

Lunch

Seafront Dining: For lunch, choose a taverna by the water and enjoy local specialties like cheese or spinach pies, lamb stew or fresh fish. Pair your meal with a glass of wine from the nearby Toplou Monastery.

Recommended place for lunch: To Limani. The place has excellent reviews, people praise its fresh grilled seafood.

Afternoon near Sitia

Toplou Monastery
It’s a great idea to devote the afternoon to visit two of the most important landmarks near Sitia, starting by the spectacular Moni Toplou, about 15 minutes by car from the center of the village, on the way to Vai Beach.

Toplou Monastery (officially known as the Monastery of Panagia Akrotiriani and St. John the Theologian), is a significant historical and religious site, established in the 14th century.

The place always played a special role in the history of Crete, enduring pirate raids, attacks, and natural disasters. It was looted and destroyed by pirates in 1498 and by the Knights of Malta in 1530. And an important earthquake managed part of its structure back in 1612, prompting the Venetians to pledge 200 ducats for its repair.

With a fortress-like design, it coveres an area of about 800 square meters. The main church dedicated to the Birth of the Mother of God. The monastery celebrates its feast day on September 26, attracting pilgrims from all over Greece.

Relax at Vai Beach
After visiting Toplou take a short drive to the famous Vai Beach, home to Europe’s largest natural palm forest.

Considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, with a scenic landscape and calm waters, I suggest to spend the rest of the afternoon swimming in the clear waters, lounging on the sandy shore, or exploring the landscape before returning to Sitia.

Evening

Sunset at the Sitia Promenade
Return to Sitia in time for a walk along the promenade during sunset. The soft glow of the evening light creates a magical atmosphere as the town’s lights begin to twinkle and reflect the warm colors of the sea.

Dinner at a Traditional Taverna
Enjoy dinner at a local taverna in the town center. Try dishes like slow-roasted lamb, rabbit stew, or kalitsounia (Cretan cheese pastries), and dakos for an authentic taste of the region.

Suggested place for dinner in town: Kritiko Spiti. The place is perfect for families as it features a dedicated playground for kids.

Late Evening

Conclude your day with a drink at one of the bars by the harbor. Sip on a cocktail or a glass of sweet wine before ending your day in Sitia.

Practical details to spend a day in Sitia

• You can get to Sitia by car from Heraklion. Buses also run regularly from the KTEL bus station (in Heraklion) to Sitia. The journey takes about 2.5 hours.

• The bus ride is shorter if you travel from Agios Nikolaos (around 2 hours)

• However, the best way to get to Sitia is car because the trip is perfect to enjoy a scenic seaside route offering stunning views of countryside and endless opportunities to stop along the way to visit unique (and quite unkown) local landmarks

• To avoid extreme heat, spring and early summer are the best times to visit Sitia (and all east Crete).

Sitia’s a cultural heritage and quiet atmosphere are nothing but the best setting to experience the legendary Cretan hospitality. In just one day, you can check out its Venetian roots, enjoy some of the best beaches on the island, and even go wine tasting.

Though compact, Sitia will certainly leave a lasting impression and quickly become a favorite memory during your journey through Crete.
