One-Day Itinerary in Chania Town: Discover the Heart of Crete

Chania is on the northwest coast of Crete and is a place were the past and the present blend in a way that you won’t forget easily. During this day in town, you will get to explore the picturesque Venetian harbor and historic Old Town, sample some of its delicious cuisine and enjoy unique wonders waiting to be discovered.

Morning: Explore the Old Town and Venetian Harbor

Start your day early with a stroll through Chania’s Old Town. Wander along the cobblestone streets, taking in the colorful Venetian and Ottoman architecture. Stop by Yiali Tzamii, which has been known in history by different names: the Mosque of the Janissaries, and Küçük Hasan Mosque (meaning small mosque). In the area, locals love to hang out at the Apothiki and Aroma, two charming cafes near the waterfront.

You will be in the heart of the Venetian Harbor, one of Chania’s most iconic spots, just opposite the old Egyptian lighthouse, originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century. This is one of Chania’s most picturesque spot and a perfect background for photos.

To make the most of your coffee in town, order a portion of bougatsa, a traditional Cretan pastry filled with creamy cheese or custard, to fuel up for the rest of your day.

Midday: Dive into History at the Maritime Museum and Agora

After soaking in the views of the harbor, head to the Maritime Museum of Crete, located at the entrane of Firkas Fortress. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Chania’s nautical history, from ancient times to World War II.

From there, take a short walk to the Municipal Market of Chania (Agora). This bustling indoor market is the perfect place to browse local goods, from olive oil and honey to herbs and handmade souvenirs. Pick up a few snacks or gifts to take home.

Lunch: Savor Cretan cuisine

For lunch, choose one of the authentic tavernas in the Old Town. Try Cretan specialties like dakos (a barley rusk topped with tomato, feta, and olive oil), grilled lamb, or fresh seafood. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or a cold raki, the traditional Cretan spirit.

Afternoon: Relax in the Splantzia District

After lunch, wander into the charming Splantzia District, known for its bohemian vibe and historic character.

Visit Agios Nikolaos Church, a unique structure featuring both a bell tower and a minaret. You can spend some time relaxing in the square under the shade of old plane trees or enjoy a cold beer at Fix, a local taversa serving delicious mezedes. This area is quieter and less touristy, offering a peaceful escape and a chance to mingle with locals.

This street, popularly known as Maxairadika (the Road of the Knives) is one of the most picturesque corners in the city.

Evening: Sunset and dinner by the sea

As the sun begins to set, make your way back to the harbor for the golden hour. The views of the lighthouse and the shimmering sea are breathtaking. For a memorable experience, walk along the harbor’s edge to get the best vantage point of the sunset.

For dinner, book a table at a waterfront taverna (I suggest checking out Salis, Almyvita, or the fantastic Chania Sailing Club!).

Enjoy freshly caught fish or gemista (stuffed vegetables), with a side of tzatziki. You can end your meal with a serving of loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts) or a slice of walnut cake. Or even try a local ice cream as you take the last steps along the pedestrian Chalidon Street.

Bonus: Late-night stroll or drinks

If you’re up for it, take a nighttime stroll along the Venetian Harbor, which looks magical under the glow of the lights. Alternatively, find a cozy bar to enjoy a final glass of raki or a creative cocktail made with local herbs and ingredients. My suggestion? Sinagogi Cocktail Bar, in the heart of Zudecca, Chania’s old Jewish quarter.

• How to Reach Chania Airport: The local bus company of Chania (KTEL) connects the city with Chania International Airport – Giannis Daskalogiannis – with a regular bus service. The bus departs opposite the arrivals-departures building. The ticket is €2.5.
  
• Souda Port is the commercial harbor serving the city of Chania. It gets daily arrivals from Athens and a number of cruise ships docking during the high season. You can reach Chania town by catching the local bus or by taxi. Depending on the traffic and the hour of the day, the trip can last from 15 to 30 minutes.

• The bus from the city center to the port departs from Central Market Square every 20 minutes (it runs from 6 am to 11 pm). The bus connecting Chania to Rethymnon and Heraklion also stops at Souda port. So you can catch that bus. Check prices and schedule here.
