Fragrant coffee, orange juice, or a cup of local Cretan mountain tea… it doesn’t matter which beverage you choose to start the day. When you’re on vacation, breakfast tastes different. Maybe it’s because someone else is making it for us, or we don’t have to rush our cuppa before heading to the office.
The truth is that there is no greater pleasure than spending a good, long hour enjoying a warm croissant while taking in the views of a stunning city like Chania. Sure, you can have a regular breakfast buffet at your hotel. But you can also go on an inspiring adventure to learn about the local breakfast.

Breakfast in Crete
On Crete and for long years, breakfast was the main and most important meal, the food men would eat before heading to the fields for a long day’s work. It normally included eggs cooked the Cretan way, cold cuts and meat, potatoes, and fresh cheese.
Often, it was a dish from the meal served at the previous dinner, and it was not odd to find a small glass of wine at the table, too. Today, some very old taverns still serve stews, soup, bread, and wine for breakfast (in small villages and even in Chania’s municipal market), but the trend has slowly changed to keep up with today’s faster pace of life.
Let’s now look at some unique dishes you can try and then dive right into the best places for breakfast in Chania!

Traditional Breakfast in Crete
These are some of the most common dishes you can find in Crete when it’s breakfast time:
Dakos: paximadia rusks with fresh grated tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and mizythra cheese.
Bougatsa: one of the most traditional phyllo pastries made on the island filled with cheese or custard and topped with sugar or cinnamon
Sfakian pie: or, as locals call it, Sfakiani pita, this is a delicious treat similar to a flat pancake, filled with a layer of mizythra cheese and drizzled with thyme honey.
Loukoumades: typically known as Greek donuts, these deep-fried pastry balls are often served hot with a drizzle of honey and some ice cream.
Koulouri: bread rings from the Byzantine tradition, often purchased at a bakery and eaten on the go.
Kalitsounia: small Cretan-style “empanadas” filled with mizythra cheese, greens, or anamixta (mixing both!)
Pies: spanakopita (spinach), tiropita (cheese like feta, anthotiros, or mizythra), and various pies with other fillings, including ham, sausage, meat, or chicken, are common in Crete for a savory and filling breakfast.
