Benefits of Hiking with Kids in Crete

Family Bonding

As you might have guessed by now, hiking in Crete is not just about physical exercise. It’s about creating a safe and enjoyable environment for your family to connect with nature and each other.

Educational Opportunities

Crete’s landscape is steeped in history and culture. Hiking trails often take you to significant archaeological sites or areas rich in local flora and fauna. In other words, your children will have plenty of hands-on learning experiences.

For example, imagine your little one’s imagination running wild while visiting the Ideon Cave, where legends say the great Greek god Zeus was raised.

Physical Health Benefits

The physical benefits of hiking for children are immense. Even smaller and relatively easy hikes in places like Kounaviano Gorge or Agios Antonios Gorge will strengthen your family’s stamina and overall physical fitness. More importantly, natural play and exploration will improve your children’s mental health.

Top Family-Friendly Hiking Trails in Crete

Finding a trail that suits the entire family can often be tricky. Not in Crete. Here are some trails tailored for little explorers so your family adventure will be a worry-free experience!

Note that what follows is only an example of how beautiful and different the hiking trails in Crete can be. An exhaustive list would fill up a book.

Diktean Cave, Lasithi

Venture into the heart of Crete at the Diktean Cave, a site steeped in mythology as the legendary birthplace of Zeus. This UNESCO World Heritage Site awes families with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Regarding the route, the trail to the cave is well-marked and one of the relatively easy walks in Crete, perfect for children of all ages.

Katholiko Monastery Trail (Akrotiri Peninsula), Chania

The Katholiko Monastery Trail is a must for breathtaking coastal views paired with some historical intrigue. Imagine walking down a scenic descent through a gorge to the ancient Katholiko Monastery. Before this relatively easy trail ends, you’ll even enter the Arkoudiotissa Cave, a fascinating stop for your little ones.

Samaria Gorge with Older Kids, Chania

Challenge your family with a trek through the Samaria Gorge with kids, one of Europe’s longest and most renowned gorges. This hike will expose you to natural sights of unparalleled beauty, but be prepared. Samaria is a harder route but ideal for older children and teens.

However, if you attempt the hike, expect to wind through majestic cliffs and diverse flora before reaching the stunningly narrow ‘Iron Gates.’ Once you reach the trail’s end, you can hike or board a bus to Agia Roumeli. Here, your kids can refresh at the beach with a relaxing swim before catching the boat back to Chora Sfakion or Sougia (another adventure for your little ones).

Imbros Gorge, Chania

One of the most popular hikes in Chania, especially for families with kids or those with little hiking experience, Imbros can be the right place to enjoy hiking in Crete with kids.

The hike is fairly easy and mostly downhill, making it a perfect choice for families. Avoid the hike in the hottest hours of the day and carry plenty of water. Unlike Samaria, you will not find natural water springs along the way.

Idean Cave, Rethymnon

Lastly, the Idean Cave, located in the mystical Psiloritis Mountains, uniquely blends natural beauty and mythological history. Believed to be another site linked to Zeus, this cave offers a more straightforward hike suitable for families. Once inside the cave, you’ll immediately feel the mythical atmosphere, not to mention the geological formations that are a sight to behold.

Patsos (Saint Anthony) Gorge, Rethymnon

Green and easy, Patsos Gorge was one of my kids’ favorite trails when they hiked their trails on the island. The gorge, easy to reach from the center of Rethymnon town, features a refreshing river, rails, secure paths, wooden bridges, and a unique cave with a religious shrine inside.

The gorge also features a picnic area where you can sit and enjoy a refreshing break, so don’t forget to pack a kid-friendly lunch, plenty of fruit, and drinks.

Red Beach Trail, Matala, Heraklion

This short trail leads from Matala Beach to the solitary Red Beach in the same area, perfect for older kids who don’t fear a hike uphill. The hike is done completely under the sun (no trees for shade over here), so avoid it during peak hours and carry plenty of water.

Once the trail is over, kids (and parents) will enjoy a refreshing swim at the spectacular Red Beach.

Richtis Gorge, Lasithi

Richtis Gorge, on the northern coast of Lasithi (a few miles from Agios Nikolaos), offers a unique experience, the chance to enjoy spectacular landscapes and even have a refreshing swim by a small waterfall. Besides, at the end of the trail, a fantastic, solitary cove can be a fun place for a picnic before returning to the starting point. Although this can be considered a better trail for older kids, I hiked Richtis when my youngest was only eight, and he loved it!

Tips for Safe and Enjoyable Family Hikes

Keep these suggestions in mind when planning your hike on the island. It will give you peace of mind and allow you to focus only on the essentials.

Packing Essentials

Pack wisely for a family hike in Crete to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. Always carry plenty of water, snacks, and necessary medications. A first-aid kit, map, and compass are crucial if you stray off the path. Finally, wear appropriate hiking shoes—no flip-flops, please, on the gorges.

Staying Hydrated

Hydration is key, especially for children, to keep energy up and prevent discomfort. There is one rule to remember. Pack more water than you need, and encourage frequent drinking. Avoid sugary beverages, as they might lead to quicker dehydration. A good idea is to bring small, easy-to-eat fruits such as grapes or berries. They’re the best snacks!

Keeping Kids Engaged

If your kids get restless, prepare to do fun activities like scavenger hunts or nature bingo. Or give them binoculars for bird watching and take breaks at natural sights like streams or unique rock formations. That will keep the hike enjoyable for kids.

In our case, both my kids enjoy photography and keeping them engaged with the camera has always worked wonders.

At the beginning of our adventures, I remember purchasing an affordable, second-hand cameras that would not hurt losing or breaking as we explored. The idea was to give them activities such as “by the end of the road, everyone must have a photo of … a goat, a rock, a mountain, a flower” etc. That always kept them engaged.

They loved finding goats to have a snapshot of them!

Time went by and they grew to be able to handle my own camera (in fact many of the photos on this blog were take by my kids!).

Eventually they got a phone with a camera and now… well, now they do not really need activities to remain engaged (yet, -with plenty of dread 😜- they continue taking photos for this blog).

Post-Hike Activities for Families

After hiking in Crete with kids, every member of your family will have one thing in mind. Food and Beach. I know that’s two things, but you can find them in the same place in Crete. Almost every popular sandy beach has a Greek tavern a stone’s throw.

Swimming Spots

Your real question is which beach to visit after the hike. Although that will depend on where you are, you won’t be far from a swimming paradise.

Among the two options, Elafonisi, Balos Lagoon, and Preveli Beach offer crystal-clear waters and breathtaking natural scenery. These spots are perfect for families relaxing and playing in the water after a day on the trails.

Local Cretan Cuisine

Hiking and swimming are fun, but it won’t be long until your body craves extra calories. Thankfully, you’re in a foodie’s paradise. Crete is renowned for its flavors and unique Mediterranean cuisine,

Local tavernas and restaurants serve various dishes that appeal to all ages. From the crisp Dakos to hearty moussaka and fresh seafood, each meal is an opportunity to savor flavorful Cretan specialties.

A rewarding gyro wrap is always a good idea.

Kid-Friendly Sites Nearby

Crete has the answer for more activities with your kids beyond natural landscapes. Near many hiking trails, you’ll find kid-friendly sites near several hiking spots, such as the Knossos archaeological site and the CretAquarium in Heraklion or Limnoupolis Water Park, a few minutes by car from the center of Chania.

There, your kids will entertain themselves while learning more about the island. Such activities will enhance your family’s hiking adventure.

Exploring Potamida, in Chania, not far from Elafonisi and Topolia Gorge.

Hiking in Crete with kids is one of the best opportunities for quality family time. Not only will you have fun together, but you’ll discover new sights and learn more about the intricacies of what makes Crete so unique.

My wish? Let the stories of Zeus and the mystical caves, the tranquility of secluded beaches, and the hearty flavors of Cretan cuisine inspire more families to embrace nature.

Crete’s trails have one promise: to enrich, educate, and unite. So, here’s to many more journeys filled with laughter, learning, and the endless wonders of exploring Crete with the ones we love.
