What to do in Agios Nikolaos in one day

Agios Nikolaos, affectionately called “Agios” by locals, offers an idyllic retreat in the easternmost corner of the island. Known for its iconic Lake Voulismeni and waterfront with unique sculptures, the town offers modern amenities, delicious restaurants, a few interesting museums to see, and plenty of opportunityies for day trips.

You can spend a morning wandering through its streets, savoring the Mediterranean flavors that define Cretan cuisine, and relaxing by the sea. This itinerary will guide you through an unforgettable day in Agios Nikolaos, highlighting its best spots and ensuring you make the most of your time in town!

Morning: Agios highlights

Start with Lake Voulismeni
Begin your day at the heart of Agios Nikolaos, the stunning Lake Voulismeni. Surrounded by cafés and tavernas, this small but deep lake is steeped in myths and offers the perfect backdrop for your morning coffee.

Enjoy the quiet vibe, take a stroll by the water, or pick a spot with panoramic views to enjoy breakfast while soaking in views of colorful fishing boats and the surrounding cliff. My suggestion? A piece of cake and a cup of Greek coffee at Migomis, on the upper side of Lake Voulismeni, the views are spectacular!

Visit the Archaeological Museum
A short walk from the lake, the Archaeological Museum offers a fascinating look into Crete’s history. Its collection of Minoan artifacts and relics from the Hellenistic and Roman eras are worth at least an hour of your morning in town.

Explore Kitroplatia Beach
If the weather permits, take a short detour to Kitroplatia Beach, located within walking distance from the town center. It’s an ideal spot to relax and dip your toes in the crystal-clear waters of the Mirabello Bay or simply enjoy a mid-morning cocktail at one of the many waterfront bars and tavernas.

Lunchtime: A classic in town

Head back to the lake once again for a traditional Cretan lunch. Although there is a good choice of places to eat, no visit to Agios can be considered right if you skip having a meal at Karnagio. Probably the best restaurant in East Crete, this affordable place serves delicious Cretan food made with fresh produce. I never fail to visit when I’m in town.

Book a table in advance otherwise get ready to wait in line to be seated. Don’t miss the chance to try their warm dakos, a delicious barley rusk salad topped with ripe tomatoes and feta, and in Karnagio’s version, served with a delicious fried egg on top.

Afternoon in Agios

After lunch, opposite Karnagio, you can visit the small but interesting Folklore Museum of Agios Nikolaos, which offers you an entertaining way to spend some time while learning about rural and folk traditions of the area. The access is free.

If you’d rather have some time shopping instead, then walk through the town’s pedestrian area and shopping streets. Explore artisan boutiques, jewelry stores, and local markets offering handcrafted souvenirs, olive oil, and herbs. Stop by the Agios Nikolaos Bioaroma, a shop where you can learn about local herbs only steps from the sea.

Panoramic Views at the Church of Agios Nikolaos
If you have rented a car, make your way to the area known as Ormos Beach, where you can visit the small, ancient Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos in Ormos, from which the town derives its name. Its location offers stunning views of the bay, making it a picturesque spot to rest and take amazing pictures!

Evening: Relaxing time in Agios Nikolaos

Sunset at Ammoudi Beach
As the day begins to wind down, head to Ammoudi Beach for a magical sunset. This tranquil spot is perfect for unwinding with a book or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings as the sky transforms into hues of pink and orange.

In summer time, enjoy a late afternoon in the calm waters of Mirabello Bay, have a cocktail by the sea, and soak in the fantastic views of the beach.

Dinner with a View
For dinner, choose one of the many restaurants lining Kitroplatia. Indulge in dishes like lamb cooked in Cretan herbs, and end your meal with a sweet treat like baklava or loukoumades (Greek doughnuts).

The softly lit waterfront offer a calm and romantic setting you won’t easily forget. Maestrali Taverna is a great place for dinner in the area or head to Paradosiako, an unmissable ouzeri for a round of mezedes and local drinks close to the sea!

Late evening in Agios Nikolaos

Nightcap at a Local Bar
End your day on a high note at a bar overlooking the lake. Sip on a signature cocktail or a glass of local wine as you take in the glittering lights of Agios Nikolaos and the calm waters.

If you prefer a more romantic vibe and before calling it a night, take a moonlit walk along the marina. The gentle sea breeze and quiet hum of the town at night provide the perfect end to a day well spent.

Practical details to spend a day in Agios Nikolaos

• To make the most of your visit, it’s always a good idea to rent a car to be free to explore nearby landmarks without trusting on the bus schedule. • How to reach Agios Nikolaos from Heraklion Airport: There is no airport in Agios Nikolaos, chances are that you will be arriving in Heraklion. The airport of Heraklion is 59.8 km from Agios Nikolaos, which means that a trip from Heraklion Airport to Agios is about an hour. The local city bus company of Heraklion (KTEL) connects both towns with a regular bus service.

• Agios Nikolaos has a port that receives cruise ships during the hight season. If you come to Crete by ferry from Athens, you will dock in the port of Heraklion and will need to reach Agios by car, bus or taxi.
