Situated on the southern coast of Crete, in the eastern Lasithi region, Ierapetra is Crete’s fourth most important town (yes, it’s bigger than Lasithi’s capital, Agios Nikolaos!) offers a more tranquil and authentic island experience.
Known as the southernmost city of Europe, this sun-kissed destination, where the sun shines more than 300 days each year, is famed for its beautiful beaches and warm hospitality. With just one day to explore, my suggestion is to delve into the heart of Ierapetra and discover its cultural charm!
What to do in Ierapetra in one day
Often referred to as the Bride of the Libyan Sea, Ierapetra is all about a serene escape, ideal for those looking to experience Crete away from the bustling crowds that take over the nothern coast during the whole summer season, from May to late in September.
This historic city, which boasts a rich past stretching from Minoan times to Venetian rule and Ottoman domination, offers a different escape made of cultural and natural attractions. This one-day itinerary is designed to help you uncover the very best of Ierapetra, let’s get started!

→ Don’t get confused. Even when many so-called “local experts” or “Crete experts” often refer to the city as “Lerapetra”, please say its name correctly! Its correct name is Ierapetra (with an “i”). And that name means ancient (iera) stone (petra)!
Morning: Unveil Ierapetra’s past
Explore the Town
Begin your day in Ierapetra’s town exploring Kato Mera, Ierapetra’s Old Quarter, featuring an ancient maze of narrow streets and traditional architecture, featuring ancient Venetian homes with limestone arches and small wooden windows.
One of the highlights in this neighborhood is Tzami Square, where a former church dedicated to Saint John was made into a mosque by the Ottoman rulers. It still features different marbles with inscriptions in Arabic, a minaret and a beautiful sebil fountain that the Turks used for ablutions. The place is now a music school.
As you walk along the narrow, cobblestoned roads, you might even find some small souvenir shops that offer local products and simple trinkets to take back home. In the old quarter, you can also find a unique hidden gem, a small building known as to spiti tou Napoleonta, the house of Napoleon. It is said that the French statesman spent a night in town, in the house of a local family, on his way to Egypt, in June 1798, before the Battle of the Pyramids (July 1798).
According to local sources, since Napoleon was incognito, nobody knew he was in Ierapetra, however, it is said that he left a note to be found after his departure in which he revealed who he was.
Only a few meters from this historic building, you will reach the Kales Fortress, a 13th-century Venetian fort that overlooks the harbor and that was later on occupied by the Ottomans when they conquered the island.
Coffee by the harbor
Enjoy a cup of Greek coffee at one of the old cafés by the harbor. The peaceful setting, complete with fishing boats bobbing in the water, is the perfect way to take a break during the morning before heading to the next stop.
Visit the Archaeological Collection
The renowned Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra is located in a historic Ottoman school worth the visit not just for the exhibition but to admire the historic building.
Inside the museum, you can spend at least an hour discovering fascinating artifacts from Ierapetra’s history and some nearby settlements, including Minoan pottery and Roman mosaics. It’s a compact but rich cultural stop that you should not miss.
Afternoon by the sea
Relax at the Beach
Spend your afternoon at one of Ierapetra’s pristine beaches. The city has a few beach areas, but I suggest getting in a car and driving a few minutes east or west to find better options. From the golden sands of Koutsounari Beach to the more secluded coves of Agia Fotia, you can enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea or simply bask in the sun.
Since lunchtime is approaching, you might prefer to visit a town with better lunch options than just a couple of tavernas by the sea. If that’s the case, I eagerly suggest heading to the small settlement of Makrigialos, about 15 minutes from Ierapetra.
At Makrigialos waterfront, you will find a large selection of restaurants, snack bars, and beachfront tavernas for a traditional Cretan lunch. I suggest trying seafood paired with local olive oil and aromatic herbs. For something uniquely Cretan, try a refreshing dako salad, a tomato salad featuring feta cheese or myzithra and local barley rusks.
Walk Along the Promenade
After lunch, take a leisurely stroll along Makrigialo’s waterfront and head back to Ierapetra to enjoy a sunset by the sea.

Sunset at West Beach
Head to West Beach to witness a stunning sunset, pick a seaside cafe, sit back and enjoy the calm waters and orange hues as the sun sinks in the horizon.
Pick a traditional fish taverna by the sea (I always suggest Gorgona Taverna) and order a fresh fish platter – trust me, you won’t regret it! If you prefer more Cretan flavors, then sample dishes like antikristo (slow-roasted lamb) or kalitsounia (Cretan cheese pies).

Late evening
Wrap up your day with a nightcap at a seaside bar. Sip on a glass of local raki or a creative cocktail while listening to music or engaging in conversation with the locals. The best place for that is definitely Waikiki!
If you’re not ready to call it a night, spend some quiet time stargazing from the beach. The clear southern skies of Crete offer a spectacular celestial display, providing a serene end to your day.

- Ierapetra is located around 40 minutes (35 km) from Agios Nikolaos. The best way to get there is by car. However, it is also possible to travel by bus (from Agios or Heraklion). During the high season there are several daily buses connecting the northern coast to Ierapetra.
