Planning a full week in West Crete gives you the rare opportunity to slow down and truly connect with the landscape, rather than simply ticking off highlights. This side of the island unfolds gradually โ through winding coastal roads, dramatic mountain passes, pink-sand lagoons, and villages where traditions are still part of daily life.
One day might find you swimming in crystal-clear waters; the next, hiking through rugged terrain or lingering over a long lunch in a family-run taverna.
This 7-day West Crete itinerary is designed to balance iconic sights with lesser-known corners, blending nature, culture, and authentic local experiences.
How to spend 7 days in West Crete

West Crete is where rugged mountains meet the sea. And the Venetian harbor hums with the energy of locals. Anchored by the lively city of Chania, this side of the island offers a more romantic and adventurous take on Cretan life made of wine sipping in Apokoronas, hiking the dramatic gorges of Sfakia, and golden hour in a seaside taverna.
Living in this part of the island for the last 10 years, my itinerary invites you to slow down and savor everything! And I can guarantee you’ll love it!
Let’s admire the west’s natural beauty and cultural depth, adding just enough spontaneity to keep things exciting! with time in both the north and south, plus a small detour to nearby Rethymno. Bookmark this guide and enjoy a well-rounded taste of one of Creteโs most captivating regions.
Day 1: Arrive in Chania & settle into the Old Town

Start your West Crete adventure in Chania, one of the most picturesque towns in the Mediterranean.
Check into a boutique guesthouse or restored Venetian home in the Old Town, and ease into the Cretan rhythm with a morning visit to the Maritime Museum at the harbor’s western end, a fascinating glimpse into Creteโs nautical history.
Discover the old town by walking in the maze-like alleys of the Topanas and Splantzia quarters full of Ottoman and Venetian charm. Chania is a city that feels like a living museum with centuries of history.

As the light softens, head toward the Venetian harborโone of the most iconic in all of Greeceโand watch the sun dip behind the lighthouse.

Start the day inland with a visit to the Botanical Park of Crete, an oasis of Mediterranean flora and tropical plants tucked into the mountains, a few minutes from the center of town.
Then, drive through the orange-growing region of the Keritis Valley and head to Therisos, a mountain village tied to Creteโs independence movement.

Over here, you can visit the Resistance Museum, and have lunch at one of the many tavernas near the Therisos Gorge. You will be in the best spot to try authentic food from Chania.
Must-Do:
- Walk through the shaded paths of the Botanical Park.
- Lunch at a rustic taverna serving goat, cheese pies, and mountain greens.
Overnight: Chania
Day 3: Gramvousa Peninsula & Balos Lagoon (boat or hike)

Don’t stay in bed until late in the morning because todayโs highlight is one of Creteโs most dazzling and otherworldly landscapes: Balos Lagoon!
Located on the rugged Gramvousa Peninsula in northwestern Crete, Balos is famous for its turquoise waters, white and pink sand, and untamed beauty.
You can reach toda’s destination in two ways:
- take a boat cruise from the port of Kissamos, which also includes a stop at the island of Imeri Gramvousa and its Venetian fortress,
- or if you’re feeling more adventurous, drive along a bumpy dirt road followed by a short hike down to the beachโrewarded by an unforgettable aerial view as you descend.
⛴️ Want to See Balos Without the Hike?
The easiest way to enjoy Balos Lagoon is by joining a comfortable boat cruise from Kissamos. Itโs the most popular option โ and for good reason!
🌊 Book the Bestselling Balos CruiseThe lagoon itself is shallow, warm, and ideal for swimming or simply soaking in the surreal setting. You can wade out for hundreds of meters over soft sandbars while gazing at the dramatic cliffs and hills that frame the bay.

The nearby Gramvousa island adds a layer of history to the experience, with its fortress offering panoramic views of the sea and surrounding coastline.
After a day of sun and sea, make your way back and stop in the small village of Kaliviani, just outside Kissamos. The local taverna is a local favorite known for its hospitality and creative Cretan cuisine.
Overnight: Chania or Kissamos
Day 4: Journey to the mountains – Apokoronas villages & hands-on in Vamos

Today, leave the coast and head into the heart of the Apokoronas region, starting our experience in Vamos, a once-abandoned village now lovingly restored by locals and creatives. With its stone alleys, old olive presses, and welcoming community, Vamos is the ideal place to get closer to Creteโs living traditions.
Begin the day with a stop at the Monastery of Agios Georgios Karydi, just outside Vamos. This quiet, sanctuary has a long history and a beautiful olive mill you can still see today.

Continue on to the village of Gavalochori, home to a small Folklore Museum inside a traditional stone building, that gives insight into old Cretan lifeโfrom weaving and lace-making to shepherding and wine production.
In the afternoon, return to Vamos for a hands-on Cretan cooking lesson. Learn how to prepare traditional recipes like dolmades, kalitsounia (cheese pies), and slow-baked lamb with local herbs. The best part? Youโll enjoy your creations over wine in the garden or under the shade of vinesโjust like a local family meal.
Wrap up your day with a sunset stroll or tsikoudia (Cretan raki) at a quiet village kafeneio.

Looking for an alternative trip? If you’re not into cooking, then why not drive to nearby Rethymno?

If staying late, enjoy dinner at Avli in the old town before heading back to Chania or overnighting in Rethymno.
Day 5: Into the gorge โ Imbros or Agia Irini

If the legendary 13-kilometer Samaria Gorge seems too demanding for your travel pace, West Crete still offers incredible hiking alternatives with ease of access.
Two excellent options are Imbros Gorge and Agia Irini Gorge, both memorable walks through dramatic terrain without the intense descent of Samaria.
Imbros Gorge
Located near the village of the same name, is around 8 kilometers long and gently slopes downhill from the mountain village of Imbros to Komitades. Along the way, youโll walk between towering limestone walls that at times narrow to just a few meters wide.
The Imbros trail is a historic route used by Allied troops during WWII, and it feels like walking through a natural canyon cathedral. Once you reach the end, enjoy a cold drink or meal in Komitades before arranging a ride back.

If you hike Imbros, spend the afternoon in the nearby coastal village of Chora Sfakion, an authentic fishing town known for its seaside tavernas and laid-back vibeโa perfect place to swim, and Sfakian pites, the local treat!
Agia Irini Gorge

Located in the region of Selino, Agia Irini offers a 7.5-kilometer trail with a more forested atmosphere, made of pine-shaded paths and wooden bridges. The hike finishes near the village of Sougia, where you can reward yourself with a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea or a relaxed lunch by the beach.
After your hike, take a few hours to explore Sougia. You can return comfortably to Chania to spend the evening.

Overnight: Chora Sfakion, Sougia or return to your base in Chania depending on your route
Day 6: Elafonisi Beach via Elos & Topolia Gorge

Take the wild southwestern route to Elafonisi Beach, famous for its dreamy pink sands and shallow lagoons. Known for its pink-hued sand, Elafonisi is a paradise for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring. The beachโs shallow waters are ideal for families!
On your way there, take time to visit Topolia Gorge, a lesser-known but stunning natural spot featuring dramatic cliffs and a hidden cave, Agia Sofia. This is an excellent place for memorable photos and a fresh orange juice at a taverna on the road.

Complete the drive to Elafonisi and spend the morning exploring its unique coastal ecosystem, walking across the shallow waters to the small islet, or simply lounging on the pink sand.
After the beach day, head back to Chania making a stop at the quaint mountain village of Elos, surrounded by chestnut trees. Here, you can enjoy a traditional Cretan lunch, often featuring local specialties drizzled with the regionโs famous thyme honey.

Day 7: Last day in Chania โ Market, art & farewell

Spend your last morning in Chania town before you say goodbye to this part of Crete. Start with a visit to the covered market, the Agora to wander through stalls brimming with fresh produce, aromatic herbs, traditional cheeses, and handmade craftsโperfect for picking up last-minute souvenirs or gifts.
Afterwards, find a sunny cafรฉ to savor one final cup of strong Greek coffee. If your schedule allows, consider a visit to the Archaeological Museum in Halepa, which houses fascinating artifacts, offering an interesting closure to your West Crete adventure.

Must-Do:
- Visit Etz Hayyim Synagogue
- Early dinner at Avli ton Tavmaton or Kouzina e.p.e. both in Splantzia.
Evening: Depart from Chania airport or extend with a stay in Rethymno or inland.
This West Crete itinerary avoids some of the obvious (because who wants to avoid Elafonisi?!) and takes you deeperโinto gorges, gardens, and hilltop villages. Don’t hesitate to explore West Crete, a region gives you space to explore at your own pace.
