Morning: Old Town and Fortezza

Start your day with a visit to Rethymnonโs charming Old Town. Wander through its narrow streets, lined with Venetian mansions, colorful balconies, and boutique shops. Donโt miss Rimondi Fountain, a historic landmark surrounded by quaint cafรฉs, perfect for a quick coffee stop.
After exploring the Old Town, head to the Fortezza, the cityโs iconic hilltop fortress. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century, it offers panoramic views of the city and the sea. Take your time strolling through its walls and courtyards, soaking in the historical significance and breathtaking vistas.
Midday: Harbor and lunch by the sea
Make your way to the picturesque Venetian harbor, one of Rethymnonโs most photographed spots. Admire the lighthouse, a legacy of Venetian rule, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as fishing boats bob in the water.
For lunch, choose avoid the waterfront tavernas and walk the backstreets to indulge in authentic Cretan food avoiding the usual toursit traps. My suggestion? Kyria Maria on Mosxovitou Street, a classi local favorite!d. Pair your meal with a glass of local white wine (try Vidiano or Vilana) for the full experience.

Afternoon: Historical sites and local delights
After lunch, visit the Neratze Mosque, an architectural gem that reflects the cityโs Ottoman past. Today, it functions as a music conservatory and occasional concert venue. From there, it’s easy to get to the Historical and Folklore Museum, which offers a glimpse into traditional Cretan life with exhibits on textiles, pottery, and local crafts.
If you have time, take a short walk to Guora Gate, the last remaining section of the cityโs Venetian walls. Itโs a great spot for photos and a quiet moment to reflect on the layers of history that define Rethymnon.

Evening: Sunset and dinner
As the day winds down, find a spot to watch the sunset. The harbor is a fantastic choice, with the lighthouse providing a perfect silhouette against the glowing sky.
For dinner, opt for a traditional taverna in the Old Town. Enjoy dishes like lamb with stamnagathi (wild greens), stuffed vegetables, or Cretan pilaf. End your meal with a sip of raki and a sweet dessert like baklava or kalitsounia (Cretan cheese pastries).
