Elafonisi Beach, in the Chania region of Crete, is probably the most visited shore on the island. Driving to Elafonisi can be a memorable adventure.
This guide tells you how to get there from different areas, which roads to take, and what public transport options you have.

General info about Elafonisi
The fantastic pink sand beach is located on the southwest coast of the Chania region.
Distances:
- ~74 km from Chania (1–1.5 hours)
- ~130 km from Rethymnon (2+ hours)
- ~211 km from Heraklion (3–4 hours)
🎯 If you’re staying in Heraklion, think carefully before planning this as a day trip. The distance is significant, and the journey can be tiring, especially in peak season.
The beach is loved by families thanks to its shallow waters, but it’s equally popular with couples seeking a romantic setting and backpackers who often stay nearby, especially around Kedrodasos Beach.

Traveling to Elafonisi: What to expect
Reaching Elafonisi is possible by car, public bus, organized tours, private transfers, or even by boat from Paleochora. The best option depends on your travel style, budget, and confidence driving on mountain roads.
Driving is by far the most flexible way to explore this part of Crete, especially if you want to stop along the way or stay for sunset—something that organized tours and buses rarely allow. In fact, most tour buses leave before sunset, which is one of the most magical times to experience Elafonisi.
Public transport on Crete works well along the north coast, but reaching southern beaches like Elafonisi can be more complicated and requires planning. If you decide to take the bus, travel light, allow extra time, and be prepared for limited flexibility.
If you’re reaching Elafonisi from Heraklion or Rethymno, renting a car can be quite a good idea and will allow you to also visit other areas in south Crete. When it comes to Elafonisi in particular, most organized bus tous leave the abeach at around 3 p.m. This will shorten your time on the beach and make you skip the sunset time… My suggestion is to rent a car at least to visit some of the beaches on the southern coast.
If you are still uncertain about driving in Crete, keep in mind that bus travel is easy on the island’s north coast, but getting to places like Elafonisi, can be more difficult. If you’re ready to travel by bus, travel light, plan your schedule, and always allow extra time for unforeseen situations, like traffic.
How to get from Chania to Elafonisi
Living in Chania has given me the chance to visit Elafonisi many times, in different seasons and conditions—from quiet days in May and September to the crowded peak of August. One thing is certain: the journey is never boring.
After trying all possible routes suggested by navigation systems, one conclusion stands out clearly—the roads to Elafonisi are not easy. They are mountain roads, often narrow, with sharp bends, blind corners, and steep drops. That said, they are absolutely manageable with careful driving.
From Chania, there are two (well, three) main routes to consider. And I’ve driven on them all to bring you this post. You can choose the same roads if you’re coming from the east, since the easiest way to get to Elafonisi is to reach Chania first. Let’s see them now!

→ A word on safety: the roads are fairly safe, however, don’t expect to speed on any of these roads. They are all mountain roads, some are very narrow, feature bends or blind hairpin turns.
Driving to Elafonisi: The experience
Hiring a car is the easiest and most rewarding way to get to Elafonisi. And it has become quite easy since a new road has been opened in recent months. Getting there by car allows you to explore freely and stop whenever the landscape invites you to take a photo—which happens often.
Even if you are not fully confident driving in Crete, many visitors find that taking the wheel themselves actually helps, especially on mountain roads where being in control feels more reassuring than being a passenger.
Parking in Elafonisi
In recent years, access to Elafonisi has changed significantly, especially when it comes to parking. The old informal parking areas right next to the beach are no longer in use, and today visitors must leave their car in a large organized parking area located about 700 meters from the beach.
This new parking space is designed to better manage the high number of visitors and protect the fragile natural environment of the area. It usually comes with a small daily fee (around €5), and from there you’ll walk along a path toward the beach.
The walk is relatively easy but can feel longer under the strong sun, so it’s a good idea to bring water, a hat, and anything you might need for the day.
There are several convenience stores in the area where you can get food and drinks, beachwear, or anything you may have forgotten.
While this change may feel inconvenient at first, it actually helps preserve Elafonisi’s unique ecosystem and keeps cars away from the shoreline—something that ultimately protects what makes this place so special.
The route through Topolia Gorge (Classic route)

The most common and traditionally preferred route from Chania is through Topolia Gorge. This road takes about an hour under normal conditions and is also the one used by buses, making it the most direct option.
The gorge begins near the village of Stroules and ends at the village of Topolia, where the cliffs become steep and dramatic. The scenery is stunning, but the road includes narrow sections and a one-way tunnel carved through the rock, which can feel intimidating to some drivers.

The road to Elafonisi Beach going through Topolia Gorge is one of the most breathtaking road trips in Chania, with plenty of opportunities for photos of the Cretan mountains.
The new road to Elafonisi (Topolia bypass)

Very recently, a new fully paved road has been opened, offering a safer and more comfortable alternative to the narrowest section of the Topolia Gorge route. This new road starts near the village of Kaloudiana and allows drivers to bypass the tight tunnel and the most winding part of the old road.
The improvement is significant. The road is wider, smoother, and designed to accommodate both cars and buses more easily, making the journey less stressful—especially for those not used to mountain driving.
That said, it’s important to understand that this is still a mountain road. You won’t be driving on a highway, but rather on a very well-maintained Cretan road with curves, elevation changes, and beautiful panoramic views.
One important detail to keep in mind is that navigation apps like Google Maps may not yet reflect this new route accurately. In many cases, GPS directions will still guide you through the old gorge road and tunnel. When this happens, it’s best to follow the road signs indicating the new bypass rather than relying entirely on your device. To put it in a nutshell, follow the signs that say “Elafonisi New Road.”
The old road through Topolia Gorge is still open, and some travelers continue to prefer it for its dramatic scenery. In fact, for me, part of the fun of going to Elafonisi is to drive through Topolia Gorge. However, for most visitors, especially those looking for a smoother drive, the new road is now the best option.
Driving along the coast

An alternative route to Elafonisi follows the coast and is especially popular if you are staying near Falasarna. This road is incredibly scenic, offering continuous sea views and a completely different perspective of western Crete.
However, it is also longer and requires patience. The road has a lot of bends, and it’s not unusual to encounter goats or sheep crossing—or even blocking—the way. There is also the occasional risk of small rocks falling from the mountains.
Despite this, it remains one of the most beautiful drives on the island, particularly at sunset, when the sun sets directly in front of you over the sea.
A great strategy is to take the inland route (preferably the new bypass) on the way to Elafonisi and return via the coastal road in the evening.
When driving though Topolia or along this coastal road, you must be cautious because parts of them might not have safety barriers or signposts indicating danger. When you reach Elafonisi by car, it’s a good idea to either spend the night in the village or to leave at least one hour before sunset, it’s always better to avoid these roads at night.
From Paleochora by boat
If you are staying in Paleochora, you can reach Elafonisi by boat instead of driving. This is a more relaxing option, especially since the road between Paleochora and Elafonisi is in poor condition (although it is a possible alternative too).
Boats usually depart in the morning, around 9 or 10 am, and return in the late afternoon. There is no proper port in Elafonisi, so you will be dropped off at a nearby docking point and walk about 10 minutes to the beach.
Tickets can be obtained close to the jetty in Paleochora or from the local taxi boats. Some boats can also take you to Kedrodasos, which is not far from Elafonisi.

Getting to Elafonisi by public bus: Schedule, price & tips
There is one direct bus from Chania Bus Station to Elafonisi Beach during the summer season, operated by KTEL Crete. The bus usually departs in the morning at around 9:00 am and returns in the afternoon at approximately 4:00 pm, although exact times may vary slightly each year. The journey takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours, and tickets typically cost between €8 and €10 (one-way).
This is the cheapest way to get to Elafonisi from Chania, but it comes with limited flexibility. Since there is only one bus per day, you must follow a fixed schedule, and a same-day return means you will likely miss the sunset—one of the highlights of visiting Elafonisi.
Buses in Crete are generally comfortable and usually include luggage storage and onboard Wi-Fi, making the trip convenient despite the restricted timetable.

Private transfer and taxi
Private transfers and organized tours are a good compromise between comfort and convenience, especially if you are traveling from Rethymnon or Heraklion. They allow you to avoid driving while still enjoying a relatively smooth journey.
You can also book the trip online before getting on the island. Prices vary depending on the transfer company and how many people share the ride. This transfer service is a good way to save money for groups of up to 5 travelers.
Taxis are also available but can be expensive, with prices ranging from around €80 from Chania to as much as €300 from Heraklion. If you choose this option, always agree on the fare in advance. Taxis can be convenient if you’re sharing the cost with other travelers.
Elafonisi tours
Another alternative is to book tour. They can vary from just transport to the beach with free time, to excursions with stops on the way to the beach or activities. And they can be private tours, in small vans, or big bus tours, with a few fix stops on the way.

Getting to Elafonisi Beach is never just about reaching a destination—it’s part of the whole experience. Every time I go, I’m reminded that the journey itself is what makes this place feel so special.
Personally, my favorite way to get there is by car, taking the incredibly scenic old road with stunning views in Topolia—and then returning along the coastal road at sunset. That combination gives you the a drive through traditional villages, and a slow, unforgettable journey back with the sea glowing in front of you.
And then there’s Elafonisi itself. It’s not just another beautiful beach in Crete—it’s one of those rare places that actually lives up to the hype. The shallow turquoise waters, the soft pink hues in the sand, and the feeling of walking across the lagoon toward the islet create a landscape that feels almost unreal.
There’s a reason why Elafonisi is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Greece and even the world—and once you see it in person, it’s easy to understand why.
Yes, it can get crowded. Yes, it requires a bit of planning. But if you time it right—arriving early or staying later into the afternoon—you’ll still find moments where the place feels quiet, wild, and completely magical.
And that’s when Elafonisi really stays with you.
