Snowfall happens occasionally, especially in January and February and often in the mountains, creating a beautiful backdrop. If gorges are your thing, you can hike Richtis. I visited wsith the kids in November and it was quite a fun experience. The landscape is stunning all year round.

During cedrtain winter months and if it has not snowed heavily, the Lasithi Plateau circuit can be a good alternative for a day trip by car. However, pay attention to the weather forecast, if heavy rain or snow are forecasted, the road might be closed to cars, so always check in advance before getting behind the wheel.

One of the best reasons to enjoy Lasithi is the unique cuisine you can taste in this corner of Crete. Othern than exploring local tavernas that remain open all year round, you can participate in a rakokazana and witness the rakin-making process and the celebrations that often accompany this event.

Not far from close-by Elounda, the submerged city of Olous is another place you can visit, while boat trips to the former leper colony of Spinalonga run on demand (according to weather conditions and the opening times of the archaeological site -I always suggest calling before planning a winter visit or getting real-time information at the port of Elounda).

Not far from Neapoli, you can also visit Driros, an ancient town that thrived during the Geometric and Hellenistic Periods. Finally, the ancient seaside town of Gournas is another must-see archaeological site for history buffs.

On a particularly cold winter day, you will be better off inside a museum, so take advantage and discover the recently re-opened Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos, one of the most important museums in Crete. Also close to Lake Voulismeni, you can visit the local Folk Museum.
