Rethymnon is a destination loved by visitors who want to have a wide range of activities during their travels. It has interesting archaeological sites, ancient monasteries, museums for those interested in history, and some very good beaches that a sun-seeker will love.
The region is ideal for immersing yourself in the local culture and exploring Crtete’s traditions. This curated itinerary will help you maximize your time in Rethymnon.

Rethymnon Day 1: Historical Exploration
Begin exploring Rethymnon and devote your first day in town to wandering the alleys of the Old Town.
After a delicious breakfast, head to Rethymnon’s Fortezza, a towering structure perched on a hilltop overlooking the sea built by the Venetians during their over 400-year rule on the island. Book a guided visit to learn about its incredible history and how it capitulated when the Ottomans conquered Crete.
Wander the castle to admire its ancient walls, bastions, watchtowers, and impressive architecture. Since the former citadel is located upon a hill, you will find breathtaking panoramic town views and the stunning coastline once you reach the highest point.

Later, walk the Old Town’s narrow alleys, lose yourself in the Venetian architecture maze, look at the Ottoman mosques, and enjoy a coffee near Rimondi Fountain in Rethymnon’s most popular square. The fountain was a public structure built 1in 1626 by a Venetian governor.
Take a break, soak up the vibrant atmosphere, and then walk down Arabazoglou Street to get a unique view of the minaret of the Neratze Mosque, now a music school. Also known as Gazi Housein Camii, this is the most famous mosque in Rethymnon, housing the tallest minaret in town. at the end of the road, you will reach a small square where you can visit the small Church of Our Lady of the Angels.

If you’re in the mood for more, after lunch in the old town, take a short trip to the historic Arkadi Monastery, just a drive away, about 35 minutes from the city.
There, you can learn about its significant role in the Cretan struggle for independence and admire the impressive two-aisled church, the imposing defensive walls around the monastery, and the gorgeous courtyard with plenty of fruit trees and flower pots, one of the best photo spots during the visit!
On your way back to the city center, be sure to find a comfortable spot at a bar by the old port to enjoy the colors of the sunset. Have a light dinner or sip on a refreshing cocktail while enjoying the city’s lively vibe at night.

Rethymnon Day 2: Beaches and Outdoor Activities
On your second day, head south to visit Preveli, one of the most unique beaches in Crete. You will reach this fantastic coastal destination by driving south. Preveli Beach features soft pebbles mixed with sand and a breathtaking landscape adorned with lush palm trees, a river flowing into the sea, and crystal-clear waters. It is arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in the Rethymnon region and one of the most popular ones, so visit early to avoid the crowds!
For a truly memorable experience, devote the later hours of the morning to exploring the nearby Preveli Monastery. This impressive building, dating back to the Venetian Era, is among scenic mountains overlooking the Libyan Sea.
Explore the monastery’s intricate architecture and ornate frescoes, as well as its tiny church sheltering the impressive Benedition Cross. Also, visit the monastery’s museum and discover its fascinating historical and religious significance.

In the afternoon, you can quickly head towards the charming village of Plakias, located about 15 minutes from the monastery, to spend a few hours unwinding on the beautiful beach, basking in the glorious Mediterranean sunshine, or enjoying plenty of immersion activities.
The village is known to offer water sports, such as snorkeling, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, for those seeking adventure. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a beachfront tavern, savoring delicious seafood while relishing the breathtaking coastal views.
Rethymnon Day 3: Culinary Delights and Cultural Immersion
Culinary delights and cultural immersion should be integral to any visit to Rethymnon if you want to experience Crete’s essence.
Begin your day with a visit to the vibrant farmer’s market (Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday). Wander through the stalls filled with colorful fruits, vegetables, aromatic spices, and local products. Engage with friendly vendors who are always eager to share their knowledge and let you taste the flavors of Cretan cuisine.
A cooking class or food tour can help you delve deeper into the region’s culinary traditions. Learn to prepare dishes like dakos or moussaka to get insights into Cretan gastronomy and a deeper connection to the local culture.

Arriving at Spili, you’ll be greeted by its charming ambiance and traditional architecture. Explore the village’s narrow streets adorned with bushes and flowers, and admire Spili’s famous Venetian fountain with over 20 identical lion heads in the heart of the main square.
