Lake Kournas

As the only natural freshwater lake on the island, Lake Kournas attracts many waterfowl and wading birds, including Herons, ducks, and the occasional Osprey.

Lake Agias

Lake Agias is another freshwater lake that serves as an important wetland for birds. It is a peaceful location, not far from Chania’s Botanical Park and often less crowded than other lakes, making it a great spot for birdwatching. The lake attracts species like Kingfishers, Waterfowl, and various migratory birds.

Preveli Beach

The palm-lined river and coastal environment around Preveli Monastery and close to the beach provide an ideal habitat for kingfishers and various raptors.

Topolia Gorge

The gorge is a must-see spot on your way to Elaonisi Beach. It features a mix of habitats, including rocky cliffs, olive groves, and riverbanks. These varied environments support a wide range of bird species, from forest dwellers to cliff-nesting raptors.

Over here (and in most gorges on the island) you can spot to see Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagles, which can often be spotted soaring above the cliffs, Common Buzzards and Long-Legged Buzzards, and Kestrels, which are often seen perched on high vantage points.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

This is another fantastic birdwatching location in Crete, located in the central part of the island, near the village of Kourtalioti.

The gorge is known for its striking cliffs, rushing waters, and diverse habitats, making it a prime location for observing a wide range of bird species, including Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagles, one of the most iconic raptors in the area, Short-Toed Eagles, Rock Doves, frequently seen flying around or perched on the cliffs and, occasionally Peregrine Falcons.

Lake Faneromeni

Located in Heraklion, near Phaistos and Lake Zaros, this artificial lake serves as an important migratory stop for numerous bird species, including Herons and Waders. Notable sightings include Egrets, and Kingfishers, while migratory waders like Sandpipers and stilt birds frequent the area during migration periods.

Rouvas Gorge

This lush, forested gorge is home to Bonelli’s Eagles, various songbirds, and a thriving bird population year-round. The gorge features steep cliffs, offering an ideal environment for a variety of bird species.

Raptors like Golden Eagles and Buzzards soar above the gorge, while the forested areas are home to smaller species such as Woodpeckers, Warblers, and Treecreepers.

Tripti Mountain Range

This remote and rugged terrain in the south is ideal for spotting large raptors such as the Lammergeier and other birds of prey. With its rugged peaks, deep ravines, and expansive plateaus, mountain-dwelling birds are common, including Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagles and Peregrine Falcons.

During migration periods, Booted Eagles, Buzzards, and Short-Toed Eagles pass through the region, making the Tripiti Mountain Range an excellent destination for observing both resident and migratory birds.

Zakros Gorge

Known as the “Gorge of the Dead,” Zakros Gorge is famous for Griffon Vultures and Peregrine Falcons soaring overhead. Located in eastern Crete, this fantastic birdwatching destination, offers an ideal habitat for a variety of bird species, especially Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagles, and Buzzards.

During migration periods, the gorge serves as a stopover for migratory raptors, such as Short-Toed Eagles and Booted Eagles, making it a great spot for watching these impressive birds.

Bramiana Dam

Located near Ierapetra, this large reservoir provides an excellent habitat for Eleonora’s Falcons and a variety of migratory birds.

Other bird species, including mallards, coots, and grebes. The surrounding wetlands attract Herons, Kingfishers, and waders such as Sandpipers and Stilts. During migration, the area also sees an influx of species like Spoonbills, making it a prime spot for birdwatching year-round.

Raptors and Vultures

• Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus): Also known as the Lammergeier, this rare and impressive bird can be found in the high mountains of Crete.
