As a parent (or a parent-planner!), you’re not just looking for a beautiful hotel — you’re looking for calm beaches, short distances, easy meals, safe surroundings, and activities that actually keep children entertained without exhausting the adults.

Visiting the Palace of Knossos.

Crete is a fantastic destination for families of all ages. It’s warm, welcoming, full of nature and history, and offers everything from water parks and shallow sandy beaches to traditional villages and hands-on cultural experiences.

The key is choosing the right area — one that matches your children’s age, your travel style, and the kind of holiday you want to have.

Heraklion region for families

Visiting the CretAquarium with the kids.

If you’re travelling to Crete with kids and want non-stop options, the Heraklion region is hard to beat. It’s easily the most entertaining area on the island for families, packed with experiences that keep children curious, active, and happy.

Just outside the city, you’ll find some of Crete’s best-loved attractions for younger travellers — from water parks and theme parks to interactive museums like the Natural History Museum, where learning feels more like play. Add the legendary Palace of Knossos to the mix, and history suddenly becomes something kids can actually enjoy.

Heraklion is also a lively cultural hub. Throughout the year, the city hosts festivals, events, and family-friendly activities, while its central location makes it ideal for day trips across the island. Cooking lessons, outdoor sports, hands-on experiences, and easy excursions are all part of the package — making Heraklion a fantastic base for a family holiday that’s both fun and enriching.

City of Heraklion

At the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion with the kids.

If you want to combine city life with family fun, staying in Heraklion town is a smart choice. Kids will love exploring historic sites like the Koules Fortress or the legendary Knossos Palace, and there are plenty of educational and interactive activities, from museums to theme parks, that make learning exciting.

Heraklion’s central location is also perfect for families who enjoy road trips. Day trips across the island — whether to charming villages, sandy beaches, or other attractions — are shorter and easier than if you were based in Chania or Lasithi, saving time and making travel with kids more relaxed.

My top picks for families in the city of Heraklion:

  • Sofia Hotel (⭐⭐⭐): family rooms, free cot available on request. ➜ BOOK HERE
  • Ibis Styles Heraklion Central (⭐⭐⭐⭐): free stay for one child, breakfast included. ➜ BOOK HERE
  • Galaxy Iraklio Hotel (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐): family communicating rooms, great pool. ➜ BOOK HERE ~ I can personally vouch for this one — see my review!

Amoudara & Agia Pelagia

If you want to stay close to Heraklion without being right in the city, Amoudara and Agia Pelagia are two excellent coastal options for families.

Amoudara (or Ammoudara) is just 10–15 minutes from Heraklion city centre and is best known for its long, sandy beach — perfect for relaxed beach days with children.

Ammoudara.

The area has plenty of restaurants, cafés, mini-markets, and beach bars, making daily life easy and comfortable. While entertainment options are limited locally, Heraklion is right next door, so museums, attractions, and activities are only a short drive away.

Getting around is simple. Renting a car is the most convenient option if you’re staying in Amoudara, but regular buses connect the area to Heraklion, and taxis are affordable and easy to find.

Agia Pelagia is one of my favourite places to stay near Heraklion with kids. Set around several small bays, the area offers calm, sheltered beaches ideal for swimming, water sports, and laid-back family time.

Agia Pelagia.

It feels more resort-like than Amoudara, with options that appeal not just to children but to parents too — from easy beach access to relaxed dining and beautiful sea views.

Its wide, sandy, and shallow beach makes it ideal for toddlers and little ones just learning to swim, while parents can relax knowing it’s safe and calm. The village is also super convenient — just off the National Road, so trips into Heraklion, or out to nearby attractions like Malia, Knossos, theme parks, water parks, and the CretAquarium, are quick and easy.

Matala and Kalamaki on the southern coast

At the Matala caves with the kids.

Our family has a soft spot for Matala, but I’ll be honest — it wasn’t always easy when the kids were little! The waves can be a bit strong, and the beach isn’t very shallow, so keeping an eye on toddlers felt a bit stressful. Back then, we mostly spent our days in nearby Kalamaki, where the beaches are calmer and more kid-friendly.

Now that the kids are older, Matala has become one of our favorite spots. The seaside town is lively and full of things to do — from exploring the famous Matala Caves to visiting nearby archaeological treasures like Phaistos Palace and Gortyna.

There are also beach bars for a relaxing afternoon, music bars for teens, and plenty of opportunities for hiking to hidden gems like Red Beach or Kommos Beach, with its fascinating seaside ruins.

Matala is especially perfect for families with older kids or teens — the mix of adventure, history, and seaside fun keeps everyone entertained.

My top picks for families in Matala:

  • Matala Bay Hotel (⭐⭐⭐): free stay for one child, breakfast included. ➜ BOOK HERE

Around Chania, you’ll also find quaint villages, sandy beaches, family-friendly resorts, nd hiking adventures — including the famous Samaria Gorge — giving families endless options for fun, education, and adventure.

Chania Town

Maritime Museum, Chania Old Town.

If your kids enjoy museums, history, and hands-on cultural experiences, Chania Old Town, with its safe pederstrian alleys is a fantastic base for a family holiday. The Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Maritime Museum are both fun and educational, sparking curiosity for little explorers.

Not only is it a great base for trips to famous beaches like Elafonisi and Balos, but the peninsula itself is dotted with calm, kid-friendly beaches that are ideal for little ones.

Villages like Stavros, Tersanas, and Kalathas are peaceful, have safe, sandy shores, and are all within easy reach of Chania, giving families the perfect mix of relaxation and convenience.

Frangokastello & Paleochora

If you’re looking for kid-friendly beaches with wide, safe sands and beautiful natural surroundings, the southern coast of Chania is a fantastic choice.

Frangokastello.

Frangokastello is a small, tranquil village with one of the island’s best family beaches. The beach is shallow and safe for children, and the fascinating castle right on the shore adds an extra layer of adventure — kids love exploring it while parents relax nearby.

Paleochora.

A little further along the coast, Paleochora offers more facilities, restaurants, and activities for families, making it perfect for a longer stay. For those who enjoy remote villages with older kids keen on water sports, Falasarna on the west coast is another great option, not far from Kissamos but still peaceful and quiet.

My top pick for families in Frangokastello:

  • Ledakis Studios (⭐⭐⭐): 3 and 4-bed studios available for families. ➜ BOOK HERE ~ Our family stayed here when the kids were small — a perfect choice!

The Old Town is also packed with excellent restaurants, traditional tavernas, cafés, and shops, making evenings easy and enjoyable without needing to drive. Thanks to the local university, Rethymno stays lively and vibrant all year round, which adds to its relaxed but energetic feel.

The pretty harbour and the three sheltered beaches are a big plus for families. Thanks to their calm, protected waters, they’re perfect for children, even on days when northern winds affect other parts of the coast.
